2006 Legislative Heroes

Our Legislative Leaders show special dedication to conservation priorities.  The five delegates and three senators you see below voted the right way on all of VALCV’s priority bills.  These legislators deserve a special show of support for their hard work, and for showing that their dedication to long term environmental concerns takes priority over the sometimes more popular quick fixes.

If you're not sure who your legislator is, use the General Assembly's Who's My Legislator utility.

If you see your legislator listed below, send them a note thanking them for their support of conservation initiatives. Click on their images to be directed to their legislative homepages.

Senator Janet D. Howell

“The voters in the 32nd Senate District are highly educated and well informed about environmental issues.  They care deeply about transportation and growth and the impact of an ever-expanding population on our community. They worry not only about the health of our rivers, streams and Chesapeake Bay, but also about the declining quality of our air and the accelerating, alarming impacts of global warming.

"Voters recognize the [Virginia] League of Conservation Voters and your awards validate me as a fighter for the environment in their minds."

Senator Linda "Toddy" T. Puller

“…Natural areas must be preserved for our children and grandchildren to enjoy. It is also imperative that we keep our water and air clean and be good stewards of our land.

"I will use [my 100% score] to encourage others to join with us in working to protect the precious natural resources that we enjoy now and underscore the necessity to continue the fight to safeguard them for the future."

Senator Patricia "Patsy" S. Ticer

“Virginia’s environment and land use policies lay the foundation for a successful, healthy future for our children and grandchildren.  We are stewards of what we have been given…Since we have not always been good stewards it is now the responsibility of those who are in power to make choices to clean up the problems created by irresponsibility in the past.

"I will use my 100% score to highlight my personal values, shared by many, many others, which absolutely require that our public bodies and individuals commit to putting the environment at the top of official and personal agendas."

Delegate Adam P. Ebbin

“Keeping our air, water and land healthy is vital to my constituents--and to all Virginians. Everyone, especially the young and the elderly, can suffer ill health when exposed to dirty air. In a densely populated district like mine, clean and green open spaces are important for recreation and a more pleasant quality of life. Time wasted in traffic is time away from family, home and work. Improved land use policies help us waste less time and lead cleaner lives."

Delegate David L. Englin

“I want my son to be able to breathe clean air, drink clean water, eat the fish he catches, and grow up healthy and strong in a world free from the threat of global warming and destructive climate change. Policies that protect clean air and clean water, conserve natural resources and habitats, and promote clean, renewable energy sources are critical investments in the future health and safety of our communities and our country.

“Earning a 100 percent voting record from [VALCV] demonstrates that my commitment extends far beyond my personal choices to the policies I support and fight for on behalf of my constituents and my community."

Delegate Jennifer "Jenn" L. McClellan

"Virginia’s rich history and natural beauty are among its best attributes and we should do everything we can to preserve them. As a freshman in the minority party, I cannot affect real change alone. I have worked with senior members from both parties to protect the environment and to make sure all Virginians have things many of us take for granted like clean drinking water and clear air. But environmental conservation should not be limited to controlling pollution. Building strong urban centers, controlling landfill siting, and promoting brownfield remediation are all ways we can be better stewards of the environment.

“I will use my 100% voting record to underscore the value of having a strong stand on the environment. Whether you’re a ‘hook & bullet’ voter or a ‘security mom,’ natural beauty and public health are important issues. I hope to demonstrate to my fellow legislators that the environment is not an issue on which to be weak, but rather a call to action that demands our vigilance."

Delegate Kenneth "Ken" R. Plum

“Legislating must be about the future.  Virginia's environment and land use policies are important to me because I want the quality of life for the children and grandchildren of mine and my constituents to be better than it is today.  Many decisions can be revoked, but with our environment and land use we cannot make wrong decisions that adversely affect quality of life in the future.

“I hope that my 100% score will serve as an inspiration to other legislators to strengthen their commitment to conservation.  The score is important to me because it conveys to my constituents an important part of my personal values."

Delegate James "Jim" M. Scott

"Preserving Virginia's environmental and historic heritage should be a priority for every legislator.  It is vital to the future of the Commonwealth and to the prosperity of our communities and to our economy."
